What Fieldnotes Are For

A fieldnote isn't trying to be right. It's trying to be accurate about a moment of noticing — which is a lower, more honest bar than most writing sets for itself. The value isn't in the polish. It's in the timestamp: this is what I thought was true on this date, before I'd had time to smooth it into something more defensible.
